What is Witnessing?

As a Christian you have hopefully heard of the term "Witnessing" by now. You may have heard other Christians say a phrase like:
"Be careful not to ruin your witness to that person."
You may have a preconceived notion that only someone who is an evangelist or a pastor should witness to people, or are qualified to witness. What is witnessing anyway?
Witnessing is simply telling others about Jesus, and your relationship with Him.

This is something that all Christians are called to do.

When Jesus healed someone, or performed a miracle, they always wanted to go tell others about it. Why?
  • Because they were really changed? Yes.
  • And because they were not ashamed.

One of the biggest bondages that the world, and Satan (who has authority over anyone who is not a child of God) has over people is pride.

This is the pride that says “I won’t look silly, or stupid, or admit that I was wrong or they were right. Or simply the pride that says, “no one is going to tell me to do anything or how to do it”. This stubbornness is also called rebellion.

The Bible encourages us to tell others about what Jesus has done for us.

So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord. 2 Tim 1:8

He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one whom God appointed as judge of the living and the dead. Acts 10:42

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." Acts 1:8

With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus, and much grace was upon them all. Acts 4:33

So what do we testify or witness about?
You need to tell others what happened to you.

What do we say?
Everything in your life should be done trusting God for the outcome, so….

On my account you will be brought before governors and kings as witnesses to them and to the Gentiles. But when they arrest you, do not worry about what to say or how to say it. At that time you will be given what to say, for it will not be you speaking, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Matt 10:18-20

The Bible also warns us about pride and being embarrassed about Jesus.

"God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Pet 5:5-7

If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." Mk 8:38
