Keeping Your Spiritual Cutting Edge - Part 1

Ecclesiastes 10:10 NKJV
If the ax is dull, And one does not sharpen the edge,
Then he must use more strength; But wisdom brings success.

 The above scripture was penned by King Solomon. If you may recall, this was the man who God offered to give anything he asked. King Solomon asked for wisdom so he could better rule God's people. This pleased the Lord and Solomon received wisdom, but also great riches, power, and fame.

If you had 2 lumberjacks cutting timber with an ax and one was taking 3 swings to the others 1 swing - Who would be doing the most effective work? This is obviously a no-brainer to answer. What about spiritually speaking? Can a child of God lose their Spiritual Edge? If so, what does it look like? When someone loses their sensitivity to the Holy Spirit, this is losing their Spiritual Edge.

There are 2 ways I can think of in the life of someone whose lost that Spiritual Edge (AKA.. sensitivity to the Holy Spirit.) Jesus Himself shows us the first one in Matthew 13:14-15

14And in them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled, which says: "Hearing you will hear and shall not understand, and seeing you will see and not perceive;
15For the hearts of this people have grown dull. Their ears are hard of hearing,
And their eyes they have closed, Lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears, Lest they should understand with their hearts and turn,
So that I should heal them.

Jesus quotes Isaiah and points out that the people are Seeing but not seeing - Hearing but not hearing! This equates to us as not allowing the Holy Spirit to lead us. If other words, we decide to go it alone and not follow the promptings of the Holy Spirit. We choose to not live our life within the safety of biblical discipline. In other words, we don't mold our daily decisions and lifestyles around God's word, but instead we choose our own foolish paths away for God. If we were to live our life in daily fellowship with God; singing praises to Him, thanking Him, praying to Him, practicing solitude as we listen for Him, reading and absorbing His holy word, and then putting it all into practice in our life, then this is one way to keep that cutting edge.
