How to Live the Christian Life

If you were to ask the general public "how to live a Christian life" then you are likely to get a wide range of answers, and not all of them will be positive. There are many perceptions and stereotypes unfortunately that has to be shaken off first. For example, to some people living a Christian life is a big list of "Thou shall Nots" that can't be violated, or else God will smack you down. Some also perceive Christians based on just the ones they have met, and this can also be a hindrance. For example, if you know a professing Christian who is overly judgmental or condemning to those around them, then this misrepresentation of Christ could become your opinion of all Christians.

This is why we should always look to the Bible as our source for truth, and especially when it comes to being a Christian. If I were working on a Ford Mustang car, and needed to read a repair manual to understand something, then it would be foolish to go to the store and buy a manual for a Chevy Minivan for my information. Yet, when it comes to Christianity how often do people rely on the opinions of others rather than reading from the source - that is the Bible?

How to live the Christian life, according to the Bible, is simple.

A person must first become a Christian.
You are not naturally born into it as with many religions. A conscious decision must be made to become a Christian. This decision must be made after hearing the Gospel, which means "Good News."

We must realize that we have a problem.
First, the bad news. Since man's fall in the Garden of Eden (found in Genesis 3), sin has entered into this world and corrupted it. The result of this is man's separation from God. Because God is Holy (without sin) and we are born into sin as the result of man's failure to obey God, we could no longer live in His presence. We are all sinners from birth, but this isn't to say we are blameless, for we all sin personally against God too. We have all sinned!

The Bible tells us this in Romans 3:23,
For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
Why is it that when we do something sinful we realize it? Why do we hide our sinfulness from others? We know deep down that there is a problem for we feel God's conviction about it each time we sin. What is really bad is that we will one day face this Holy God and be judged for our sins, and cast into Hell. Since we are guilty we face an eternal punishment.

We face being punished for our sin in a place called Hell.

In Mark 9:43 Jesus says,
If your hand causes you to sin, cut it off. It's better to enter eternal life with only one hand than to go into the unquenchable fires of hell with two hands.
In saying this, Jesus doesn't mean to literally cut off your hand, but He is rather making a point about how severe Hell is. In other words, you need to do whatever is required not to go there!

Hell is a place of Eternal Separation from God.

2 Thessalonians 1:9
They will be punished with eternal destruction, forever separated from the Lord and from his glorious power.

Hell is a Place of Fire

Matthew 13:41–42 says,
The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will remove from his Kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil. And the angels will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

It is wise not to go to Hell

Proverbs 15:24 says,

The way of life winds upward for the wise, that he may turn away from hell below.
So what exactly is this way of life that winds upward for the wise, that we may turn away from hell below?

The Good News.

In John 14:4-6 Jesus says,
4 And where I go you know, and the way you know.” 5 Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
John 3:16 tells us,
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
Romans 5:8 says,
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Romans 6:23 says,
For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 10:9-10 says,
9 that if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.
Based upon the Verses above and many others found in the Bible we can clearly see that God has provided us with a way we can escape from this judgment for our sin. Out of this we can conclude that it is as easy as A, B, C...

A... is for Admit:

Confess to God that you are a sinner. Repent or turn away from your sin.

B... is for Believe:

Trust that Jesus is God's Son and that God sent Jesus to save people from their sins.

C... is for Commit:

Give your life to Jesus. Ask Him to be your Lord and Savior.

Romans 10:13 says,

"For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.'
Many people make the mistake of accepting Jesus as their Savior, but they never allow Him to be their Lord. They want to be their own lord over their life, and do their own will instead of God's will. Those who actually become Born Again allow Him to be their Lord and Savior, not just a Savior, for if He isn't your Lord, then He isn't your Savior.

Luke 9:23-25 says,

Then he said to them all: “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will save it. What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, and yet lose or forfeit his very self?”

Romans 12:1-2 says,
I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. 2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.
Maybe you're asking, "So what does God want from me?" The answer to that is easy. God only wants one thing from you, and that is YOU! That's right, God wants your dreams, your plans, and your goals, but not just that. God wants your worries, your fears, and anxieties. God wants a complete surrender of your life over to Him. Is this a reasonable request? Well, He did give His physical life away for you. He did make a way for you to escape the eternal judgment of Hell, and better yet secure you eternally to be back in fellowship with the God who created and loves you.

Jesus promises in John 14:1-3,
“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me.2 In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, thereyou may be also."

So what must I do to be saved?

In the above passages you have just been presented with the fact that you are a sinner just like everyone else is, you will be judged for this sin and without Jesus Christ you will go to Hell. You may now realize it comes down to a decision that you alone must make. Will you choose to accept the gift that Jesus is offering you? Will you choose Life?

If so please pray the following:
Father, I admit that I am a sinner and I need you.
I ask that you would forgive me for all of my sins.
I believe that your Son Jesus paid for my sins by giving up His life on the cross.
I believe that your son Jesus was resurrected from the dead and has redeemed me.
I pray that you now come into my life and make me a new creation in you.
Lord, give me the strength I'll need to follow You.
Thank You for saving me.
In Jesus name, amen

If you have prayed this prayer and have chosen to following Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, then congratulations! You are now a child of God! You should now get water baptized, for this is the first command the new believer is to follow. If Jesus is indeed your Lord then you should obey it.
